When everyone focuses on attendance, it can feel as though nobody is seeing your child

School may see an absence, a late mark or a child who appears settled once they arrive. At home, you may be seeing panic, shutdown, physical symptoms, sleepless nights or distress at the school gate.

That gap can leave parents feeling blamed, professionals feeling uncertain and the child carrying the consequences.

This workshop is not about blaming families or schools. It is about understanding what the attendance difficulty may be communicating and responding before pressure drives a child further into distress.

School may see the absence. You may be seeing everything it takes for your child to survive the day.

This may be for you if

  • Your child is anxious or distressed about school
  • They appear fine at school but unravel at home
  • Mornings involve panic, shutdown or physical symptoms
  • Attendance is falling or becoming increasingly difficult
  • Autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma, sensory needs or unmet SEND may be contributing
  • You need a clearer way to record concerns and work with school

Every child is different. The workshop looks at the range of possible causes rather than assuming one explanation fits every family.

What the workshop will help families do

Three stages, not a fixed pathway. No two children follow the same route.

  1. Understand

Explore what may be happening beneath the attendance difficulty, including anxiety, masking, sensory overwhelm, trauma, exhaustion and reduced capacity.

  2. Record

Identify useful patterns, triggers, physical symptoms, recovery time, family observations and the child's voice.

  3. Respond

Consider practical adjustments, collaborative conversations and the SEND or education routes that may be relevant.

What we will explore

Select a heading to read more. No single approach is right for every child, so the workshop focuses on how to work out what may fit yours.

Live demonstration inside the workshop, not something you have to buy

See how scattered experiences can become structured evidence

Before

Scattered notes, messages and difficult conversations.

After

One structured picture that can be reviewed and shared appropriately, bringing together the child's voice, patterns, barriers, adjustments, family observations and review information.

  • The child's voice.
  • What is happening before, during and after school.
  • Attendance patterns.
  • Signs of anxiety, overwhelm or reduced capacity.
  • Barriers within the environment.
  • Adjustments that may help.
  • Family observations.
  • Relevant evidence.
  • Agreed actions.
  • Review information.

The EBSA Support Plan:

  • Does not diagnose a child
  • Does not make decisions
  • Does not replace professional assessment
  • Structures what families and schools already know

What families will take away

  • A clearer understanding of what EBSA may look like
  • Language for explaining reduced capacity rather than assumed defiance
  • A clearer idea of what information to record
  • Practical ideas for reducing immediate pressure
  • Greater confidence when speaking with school or the local authority
  • A plain English introduction to relevant SEND and education routes

Understanding first. Evidence next. Pressure last.

The workshop takes a collaborative first approach: helping families and schools build a shared understanding of the child's needs, identify barriers and agree practical support.

Collaboration does not mean accepting indefinite delay, unsuitable provision or increasing distress without question.

Families will also be shown how to record concerns clearly and identify when a more formal route may need to be considered.
