Explaining EBSA to Family and Friends
Reframing the Narrative from "Won't" to "Can't"
For grandparents, relatives and close friends
What EBSA Is (And What It Isn't)
EBSA is a nervous system stress response. It is not a choice, a phase, or a result of 'soft' parenting. It occurs when a child's brain perceives the school environment as a threat to their safety.
- It is NOT: Bad parenting, lack of discipline, naughtiness, laziness, or 'just anxiety' that can be pushed through.
- It IS: A physical and emotional inability to attend due to overwhelming distress.
The Panic Attack Analogy
A helpful way to explain EBSA to others is to compare it to a panic attack or sensory overload. You cannot discipline someone out of a panic attack; you cannot reward a child out of sensory overwhelm. You must soothe the nervous system and adapt to the environment.
Common Signs and Symptoms
- Physical: Nausea, headaches, tummy pains, and sleep disturbances
- Emotional: Panic, fear, sudden changes in mood, or withdrawal from hobbies
- Physiological: Exhaustion, shutdown, and 'freezing' when school is mentioned
Why They "Seem Fine" Outside of School
Family members often ask why a child can go to the park or a party but not school. The answer is context. School has far higher sensory, social, and performance demands that cannot flex with the child throughout the day. The nervous system responds to the inner experience of the child, not logic.
How You Can Support Us
- Believe the child: validation is the first step toward safety.
- Avoid judgement: comments like 'they just need a firm hand' increase shame and distress.
- Respect the 'Home Reality': parents see the full picture of the distress; what you see in public is often a 'mask' of compliance.
- Use Supportive Language: instead of asking 'Why aren't you in school?', try 'I can see things are really hard right now, I'm here for you.'
