Understanding EBSA for Brothers and Sisters
A Guide for Siblings
For siblings, to read together with an adult
What is EBSA?
EBSA stands for Emotionally Based School Avoidance. It means that for your brother or sister, school feels so overwhelming that their body and brain go into 'protection mode.' It is not their fault, and it isn't your fault either.
What You Might See
Your brother or sister might cry, feel sick, or move very slowly in the morning. They might get upset over small things or be very quiet and 'shut down.' This happens because their brain is trying to protect them from something that feels too hard, like a smoke alarm going off when there isn't a fire.
It's Not a Choice
They aren't being 'dramatic' or 'lazy' to get attention. Their body is deciding for them. Even if they can have fun at home or play games, it doesn't mean they are 'faking it.' It just means home feels safe enough for their brain to relax.
Your Feelings Matter Too
It is normal to feel:
- Worried about your sibling
- Annoyed because plans get changed or your parents are busy
- Confused about why they don't just 'go'
- Left out of the extra attention they are getting
All these feelings are okay
You are not a bad person for feeling them.
How You Can Help
You don't have to fix anything! You can be a great sibling by:
- Not teasing them about school
- Being kind and playing calm games with them
- Listening if they want to talk but not forcing them
- Asking a grown-up you trust if you have questions
One Big Secret
Little things make a huge difference. Just being a kind brother or sister helps your sibling feel safe, and safety is what helps them get better.
